It’s Funny To Be A Person: Playtime

It’s Funny To Be A Person: Playtime

Cost:  $22 ($18 members)

Monday, January 20th

Jacques Tati’s PLAYTIME (1967, 115 min) observes humans in newly modernist Paris from a distance, relishing in complex visual and auditory comedy of the mundane. Considered Tati’s masterpiece and one of the greatest movies of all time, the nearly dialogue-free film weaves together the natural mishaps and delights of being a modern person in a decidedly banal world.

This class will explore how the auteur’s uncompromising vision led to the construction of “Tativille”, years long setbacks and bankruptcy, and his legacy in physical comedy.

This class will be taught by MMU Instructor Zoe Gillian, whose recent classes include Exploring Portland Through Film, and Twisted Genius: David Fincher.

The class will begin with a short lecture, followed by a screening of the film, after which an instructor-led discussion will take place.

Class size will be limited to 18.
