Rita Hayworth created her Hollywood “Love Goddess” legend in this custom-made romantic drama, the first of several pairings with co-star Glenn Ford. One-time flames Johnny and Gilda resume their tempestuous tango after they are pulled into the orbit of a shady and sinister casino operator in Buenos Aires (George Macready). The film’s startling sexual symbolism slipped past Hollywood censors (and most viewers) at the time; today, GILDA is regarded as one of the greatest examples of a director “working around” the Production Code. The plot may be shaky, but Hayworth’s incandescent sex appeal overwhelms any quibbling. One of the most iconic noir films of all-time.
